"First who steps out of line gets shot."

Backstory

Once a military sniper with a moral code too sharp for his superiors, Malcolm now watches the battlefield with one eye on his scope — and the other on his daughter, Madeline Ellis. His tactical trench-coat exoarmor, glowing HUD visor, and modular sniper/sidearm hybrid weapon mark him as the silent judge of every engagement.

Personality

Malcolm doesn't speak unless it matters. When he does, people listen — because every word has been through the same targeting algorithm as his rounds: distance checked, windage accounted for, impact calculated.

At 40, he's the oldest active operator in nERF and carries himself like it. The military shaped him into a weapon; fatherhood reshaped him into something more dangerous — a man who fights with precision and something to lose. Every engagement is measured against the same question: does Madeline come home?

He is calm to the point of unsettling. His squadmates mistake this for cold detachment, but anyone who's seen him take a shot for his daughter knows the truth — the calm isn't absence of emotion, it's emotion compressed to its most lethal density. His codename evolved from Malfunkt (broken, failing) to Minmax (optimized, efficient). The arc is the biography.

He trusts numbers. He trusts scopes. He trusts Madeline. Everything else is provisional.

Appearance

Inspired by Crosshair (Star Wars: The Bad Batch) and Old Snake (Metal Gear Solid 4), Malcolm's design leans into veteran-sniper austerity over spectacle. Malcolm's design is military pragmatism filtered through near-future technology — the silent professional who's survived enough wars to make fashion irrelevant.

  • Hair: Close-cropped, graying at the temples — military regulation even though no one regulates him anymore
  • Eyes: Dark brown, steady, with a targeting HUD overlay that activates during combat — red reticle projections visible across his irises
  • Build: Lean and angular, built for prone positions and patient waiting — a sniper's physique, optimized for stillness
  • Outfit: Tactical trench-coat exoarmor in matte black with steel-gray plating, modular weapon mount on the back, glowing HUD visor that folds down from his collar, utility belt with suppressor rounds and smart-round magazines
  • Color Palette: Black, gunmetal, dark steel — with occasional red targeting highlights
  • Distinguishing feature: The HUD visor. When it folds down, Malcolm stops being a person and becomes a targeting system. His daughter once drew him with the visor always up. He keeps the drawing.

Relationships

CharacterRelationNotes
Madeline EllisDaughterMetanoia. Everything he does is measured against her safety. The father-daughter dynamic across enemy teams is the emotional spine of both characters.
Ilya AsimovTeammateMalcolm respects the dragon's resolve. Ilya respects the marksman's patience. Neither talks much. It works.
Julia ChoiTeammateBoth observers. Both precise. Malcolm sees in Julia the same compressed emotion he carries — ice and steel are closer than people think.
Karina MoriuchiTeammateShe's loud; he's silent. Her chaos triggers his instinct to impose order. He's learning that her chaos is also a system.
Lyndsey ParkCommanderMalcolm could lead. He chooses not to. Lyndsey's balance is what the team needs; his precision is what the team uses. Different roles.

Abilities

Passive — Suppress

Every headshot or marked kill grants Suppression Stacks (max 3). Each stack reduces Tactical/Special cooldowns by 1s and grants bonus reload speed. At 3 stacks, the next shot silences enemy abilities and applies Fear (light stagger + vision darkening). Melee finishers always reset one stack.

Tactical (1) — Darklock

Loads a high-velocity tracking suppressor round. Marks the target for 6s — they're revealed through walls, cannot use movement abilities, and take +20% damage from Malcolm. Hitting a marked target refunds part of the cooldown.

Core (2) — Ricochet

Fires a steel-laced smart round that bounces off up to 3 surfaces. Gains speed and damage with each bounce. If it hits 2+ enemies, final hit causes Bleed (Steel) and Disorientation (Dark). Holding fire allows manual steering with look input.

Special (3) — Magshade

Activates a self-shrouding cloak. Becomes partially invisible with +25% headshot damage. Next shot applies Void Pierce, ignoring armor and shielding. Breaking cloak early reduces cooldown by 50%.

Ultimate (4) — Terminate

Marks up to 3 targets in line of sight. A HUD overlay tracks each — Malcolm can auto-fire within 6s. Marked enemies are snared, silenced, and take massive critical damage from stealth. If all targets are killed, Terminator Mode activates: unlimited ammo + Tactical cooldown reset for 5s.

Trivia

  • Name origin: "Malcolm" from Malcolm Wopé (@rocketboiart), the animator. It is also a Scottish-Gaelic name meaning "devotee of Saint Columba" — grounding his military identity in British heritage. "Ellis" carries Nigerian-English crossover, honoring both halves of his dual heritage.
  • Codename evolution: "Malfunkt" → "Minmax." The first name meant broken, failing, system error. The second means optimized — minimum input, maximum output. The rename maps his arc from shattered soldier to precise father.
  • Minmax terminology comes from game theory and optimization — minimizing the maximum possible loss. Malcolm fights like a mathematician: every risk calculated, every shot an equation solved.
  • Only parent on an active team. Madeline is on Metanoia; Malcolm is on Tesserae. They fight on the same side but never on the same squad. The distance is the point.
  • Drawing detail: Madeline drew him with his HUD visor up (human, not targeting system). He carries the drawing. It's the only non-tactical item in his loadout.

Goals

  1. Keep Madeline alive — not safe, not happy, not comfortable. Alive. Everything else is secondary optimization.
  2. Earn the visor-up drawing — be the person his daughter drew, not just the targeting system. The goal isn't to stop fighting. It's to fight while staying human.
  3. Push Terminate further — three targets isn't enough. He suspects the system can scale. He's not sure the human underneath can.
  4. Train the next generation — Ilya has the discipline. Julia has the precision. He sees his own patterns replicating. He wants them to skip the Malfunkt phase.
