Malachite
Everyone in Malachite used to be someone. That is the first thing they give up.
▸Overview
Malachite is the most ritualised of the three Triads — a syndicate that has converted violence from a method into a theology. Where Lazulum keeps ledgers and Amaranth keeps cameras, Malachite keeps rites. Every action is coded. Every rank is earned through erasure. Every death is a conclusion in a sacrament that began at induction.
Members of Malachite join with a name and leave the induction process without one. The syndicate does not recruit. It ordains.
▸Philosophy
Malachite's philosophy is a doctrine of self-abolition as loyalty. The self is a liability. Individual wants, histories, names, and relationships are vulnerabilities that external actors can exploit — The Board's Credisys can manipulate your desires, Amaranth can weaponise your identity, Lazulum can document your debts. The only defence against all three is to have nothing left to leverage.
In Malachite's theology, eradicating the self is not a cost of membership. It is the product. What remains after the erasure — the role, the rank, the commitment — is what you actually are, stripped of everything the world added to you. It cannot be corrupted, because there is no person left to corrupt.
nERF's psychological profilers classify Malachite induction as a form of elective behavioural restructuring that achieves near-complete results. Malachite's own documents describe the same process as education.
▸Domain
Malachite's three domains form the enforcement substrate of the Triad system's authority:
| Domain | Detail |
|---|---|
| Discipline | Internal enforcement — handling defectors, traitors, and failures within all three Triads. C.I.D.E occasionally contracts this function through deniable intermediaries. |
| Enforcement | External violence — targeted assassination, structural erasure, physical territory denial in contested zones. |
| Ritual | The ideological infrastructure — induction processes, rank ceremonies, and symbolic violence that maintain Malachite's internal culture and existential coherence. |
The third domain is the most important. Without the ritual, Malachite is just another enforcement arm. The ritual is what makes members impossible to flip.
▸Doctrine
Malachite's doctrine is the theology of conclusion:
- ▪Self-Erasure as Security: Members surrender name, history, and civilian connections at induction. This is not indoctrination as side-effect — it is a counter-intelligence measure. It has proven remarkably effective against Lazulum's leverage operations and Amaranth's psychological manipulation campaigns.
- ▪Shame as Weapon: Failure within Malachite is not punished — it is shamed. The drive to avoid dishonour motivates members far beyond what any fear-of-punishment model achieves. nERF psychologists who have studied defectors report that shame-based retention produces significantly higher operational commitment than any other criminal organisation structure studied.
- ▪Symbolic Violence: Acts are coded with meaning beyond their utility. An assassination is not only an assassination — it is a statement within Malachite's internal moral code. The how matters as much as the that.
- ▪Escalation for Honour: Malachite will escalate a conflict beyond rational cost-benefit analysis to preserve face. They will burn a city to avoid a slight. Lazulum considers this irrational. The Board considers it worrying. nERF analysts consider it predictable — and have exploited it.
▸Structure
Malachite's structure is a hierarchical ordination system — a series of ranks earned through demonstrated willingness to erase progressively more of the self.
At the summit is the Ringleader — Ulrich Larsson (Akuma), who does not so much command as embody. He is less a leader than a proof of principle: the endpoint of self-erasure that every member is moving toward. Below him are the Ordained — senior members who have completed full erasure and operate under Malachite designations rather than personal names. Then the Initiates — members in the process of erasure, still retaining partial identity. Then Prospects — individuals under assessment who have not yet begun the process.
There is no lateral movement. Promotions are upward only. There is no retirement.
▸Rivalry
Malachite vs. Lazulum
Malachite maintains an operational accommodation with Lazulum — they don't target the same resources, and Malachite's enforcement services have occasionally been contracted through Lazulum's procurement channels on terms no one discusses publicly.
But philosophically, they are opposites. Lazulum accumulates records. Malachite destroys them. Lazulum's power comes from knowing everything. Malachite's power comes from being unknowable. Each represents a competing theory of control: documentation versus erasure.
Ulrich Larsson has one recorded statement about Ulysses Vaughan: "He mistakes memory for power. Power is what remains when memory is removed."
The ledgers Lazulum keeps on Malachite are the most heavily contested documents in the underground. Malachite has destroyed four known copies.
Malachite vs. Amaranth
This is the purest rivalry in the Triad — a theological war between two irreconcilable conceptions of what violence means.
For Malachite, violence is a conclusion: private, earned, significant, and never to be performed for an audience. It is the final statement in a moral argument that began long before the act. Putting it on a broadcast, curating it for aesthetic effect, and measuring its resonance in engagement metrics is not crime, from Ulrich's perspective. It is sacrilege.
Amaranth treats violence as content. Malachite treats violence as prayer. These two positions cannot be reconciled, and neither side has attempted reconciliation. Their mutual hostility is the most stable diplomatic feature of the Triad's internal politics.
The irony, noted by nERF analysts, is that both Malachite's ritual violence and Amaranth's aesthetic violence are performing for someone. Malachite performs for its own internal doctrine. Amaranth performs for the city. The difference is that Ulrich genuinely does not know he's doing it.
▸C.I.D.E Relationship
C.I.D.E tolerates Malachite as a controlled demolition service — an actor whose violence is targeted, documentable after the fact, and — crucially — erases its own evidence. Malachite's Ghost/Metal methodology leaves anomalous infrastructure failures, not crime scenes. This is useful.
The C.I.D.E-Malachite relationship is never acknowledged, never contracted, and never discussed. It is enacted through intermediaries, in the mutual understanding that Malachite does not ask for permission — only payment.
▸nERF & The Board
nERF classifies Malachite as a Tier-1 Threat — the most operationally dangerous of the three Triads in direct confrontation. Malachite members' complete self-erasure makes them extraordinarily resistant to standard interrogation, compromise, and recruitment. Three documented defectors in the last ten years. Two of those were found.
The Board classifies Malachite as a containable nuisance. Chairman Ryutaro Nonomura has specifically declined to raise their threat classification, believing that Malachite's ritualistic self-limitation — they escalate for principle, not profit — makes them less systemically dangerous than Lazulum or Amaranth. Several The Board security analysts disagree.
▸Trivia
- ▪Name origin: "Malachite" is a copper carbonate mineral with distinctive banded green colouration. The name derives from Greek malache — "mallow plant" — for the shared colour. Copper that oxidises and transforms. Something that once conducted and connected, now verdigris and inert.
- ▪The green-to-white discrepancy: Malachite's operative colour is white, not green — a deliberate tension with the syndicate's name. Within Malachite, the question of why they are named for a green mineral but wear white is treated as a koan. The doctrine's closest answer: "We are named for what we were before the process."
- ▪The Yakuza archetype: The historical Yakuza's defining characteristics — strict hierarchy, ritual ceremony, shame culture, the tradition of self-amputation as apology — are all present in Malachite's structure, translated into operational doctrine. Where the historical Yakuza used tattoo and ceremony to mark belonging, Malachite uses the absence of markers. The blank is the tattoo.
- ▪The three defectors: Malachite intelligence files acknowledge three defectors in the last ten years under a single heading: Unresolved Conclusions. This phrasing has not been explained to anyone outside Malachite's inner ranks.
