nu-Eden: Sundered Skies
//Jana Choi
Jana Choi
"I'll drown the past to save the future."
▸Backstory
Trained in covert ops and aquatic warfare, Jana fights not just to reclaim the future — but to protect her sister Julia Choi from drowning in the same past. Her aquatic stealth suit, hair that floats unnaturally, voice modulator, and retractable gill collar make her a phantom of the deep.
▸Personality
Jana burns. Where Julia froze, Jana caught fire — the same trauma, opposite thermal response. She channels everything into motion: hydrokinesis, competitive swimming, covert operations, and the relentless forward momentum of someone trying to outrun a past that keeps pulling her under.
At 21, she's the bridge between Alex's earnest heroism and Scott's calculated shadow. She grew up alongside both in resistance bunkers, and her loyalty to the original trio is absolute. But her primary drive isn't the resistance — it's Julia. Her younger sister froze; Jana flows. Water and ice, two responses to the same fracture point.
Her codename evolved from Cloudburst to Syren to Vortex — each name discarded because it wasn't her enough. The final name stuck because a vortex pulls everything toward it, and Jana can't stop herself from pulling her people close.
She's fiercely protective, occasionally reckless, and the only person in Avanza who will physically drag someone out of danger without asking permission first. Tidal Grasp isn't just an ability — it's her personality compressed into a water hand.
▸Appearance
Inspired by Willow (August's sister, from Project Divider) and Jeon Somi's holographic outfit from the Fast Forward video. Jana's design is aquatic phantom — sleek, fluid, and slightly unsettling in how naturally she moves through water.
- ▪Hair: Long the dark, floats unnaturally — like it's always underwater, even on land. The effect is caused by residual hydrokinetic fields.
- ▪Eyes: Dark, focused, with a faint aquatic luminescence during ability use
- ▪Build: Competitive swimmer's physique — lean, powerful shoulders, built for speed through water and air
- ▪Outfit: Aquatic stealth suit with hydrodynamic plating, retractable gill collar, voice modulator (for underwater comms and infiltration), holographic accents inspired by Somi's aesthetic. Water traces along her suit seams.
- ▪Color Palette: Deep ocean blues, teal, silver — with holographic shimmer
- ▪Distinguishing feature: The floating hair. It never fully settles. People notice this before they notice anything else about her.
▸Relationships
| Character | Relation | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Julia Choi | Younger sister | Tesserae. Jana is fire; Julia is ice. The same trauma, opposite thermal response. Jana flows to keep Julia from staying frozen. |
| Jaime Choi | Mother | Spektra. The family is split across three teams. Jana carries her mother's Water-type powers forward. |
| Alex Matsuno | Childhood friend | The original trio. Alex and Jana grew up in the same bunkers. She's his water; he's her ground. |
| Scott Moore | Teammate | The original trio. Scott operates in shadows; Jana operates in depth. Both covert, different elements. |
| Brooke Matsuno | Teammate | Jana is protective of Brooke the way she's protective of Julia — younger siblings are non-negotiable. |
▸Abilities
Passive — Hydrosense
Detects moving enemies through terrain if they're within water. If wet, gains +5% movement speed and reload speed.
Tactical (1) — Slipstream Vault
Quick dash in any direction that leaves a water trail. Trail slows enemies and speeds up allies. Holds 2 charges.
Core (2) — Tidal Grasp
Summons a water hand that pulls an enemy toward her. If they hit terrain, applies stagger and slow. If they hit an ally's ability, stuns instead.
Special (3) — Undertow
Cloaks in water and becomes semi-invisible for 5s. Next attack from stealth applies chill. Taking damage ends the effect.
Ultimate (4) — Deluge
Summons a rainstorm over a wide area. Enemies are slowed with obscured vision. Allies are healed over time and gain status resistance.
▸Trivia
- ▪Name origin: "Jana" comes from the music producer JVNA (Jana Ma). Her Korean name "So-mi" (소미) is from K-pop singer Jeon Somi. The surname "Choi" comes from artist TB Choi.
- ▪Codename history: Cloudburst → Syren (a play on "siren," altered after Warframe's Saryn caused confusion) → Vortex. Each name was shed because it didn't fit. Vortex stuck.
- ▪Julia's name swap: "Julia" was originally Jana's name. When the sister character was created, the name was transferred — making Julia literally named after Jana's discarded identity.
- ▪Original trio: Alex, Jana, and Scott are the first three characters ever designed for nu-Eden (2021). Their friendship predates everything.
- ▪Thermal symbolism: Jana (Water/Avanza) and Julia (Ice/Tesserae) encode the same trauma as opposite responses. Water flows; ice freezes. Sisters separated by temperature and team.
- ▪Honest Trailer nickname: "Shark Gyal"
▸Goals
- ▪Protect Julia — not from the war. From the ice. Jana flows so Julia doesn't stay frozen forever.
- ▪Honor the original trio — Alex and Scott are family by proximity. The bunker bonds don't break.
- ▪Master Deluge — the rainstorm is her ceiling. She suspects she can make it permanent. She's not sure what that would cost.
- ▪Outrun the past — the trauma that froze Julia is the same current that drives Jana. She runs from it by running toward everything else.
