nu-Eden: Sundered Skies
//Winona Tenenbaum
Winona Tenenbaum
"Light it up. Burn it down."
▸Backstory
A former arson investigator framed for the fires she didn't start. Winona burned her name from the registry — and now blazes through enemies who mistake her heat for rage. Her fire abilities stack Flashpoint on targets, building toward explosive detonations.
▸Personality
Winona is precise where people expect reckless. She is a former arson investigator — someone who spent years studying how fire starts, how it spreads, and how to trace a burn pattern back to its origin. When she was framed, she learned one more thing: how fire can be aimed.
She carries her wrongful accusation like banked embers — never extinguished, never out of control. Her anger is not explosive; it's endothermic. She absorbs everything, processes it, and releases it with devastating specificity. The Flashpoint mechanic isn't just combat design — it's characterisation. Winona builds, builds, builds, then detonates. Once.
As Metanoia's Strategist, she provides the tactical framework that channels the team's chaotic abilities into coordinated strikes. She rescued Ezra Asimov during his Draconian defection — an operation she planned, executed, and never discussed again. That's who she is: the person who does the thing that needs doing and doesn't need credit for it.
▸Appearance
Inspired by Ada Wong (Resident Evil), Winona's design is fire investigator turned arson avenger — a character who wears the tools of her former profession as weapons in her new one.
- ▪Hair: Auburn, shorter than expected, often singed at the tips — she doesn't bother with fireproofing the ends
- ▪Eyes: Amber-brown, with an unnerving warmth that reads as either gentle or dangerous depending on context
- ▪Build: Athletic and pared-down, no excess anything — functional to the point of austerity
- ▪Outfit: Modified investigator's coat in fire-resistant weave, sleeves rolled to the elbow. Tactical vest with thermal capacitor panels. Flame-channelling gauntlets that glow deep red when charging. Heavy-duty boots, laced tight.
- ▪Color Palette: Ember reds, deep charcoals, burnt orange — like the last glow before everything catches
- ▪Distinguishing feature: Faint heat shimmer around her hands even when at rest. The air near Winona is always a few degrees warmer.
▸Relationships
| Character | Relation | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Iain Lewin | Co-officer | She strategises; he executes. Mutual trust built on professional respect and shared stubbornness. |
| Ezra Asimov | Teammate | She extracted him from the Draconian state. Neither talks about the details. |
| Madeline Ellis | Teammate | Fire and illusion create sensory overload. Winona appreciates Madeline's calm under pressure. |
| Debra Aviles | Teammate | Shared aggression, different expression. Debra smashes; Winona ignites. |
▸Abilities
Passive — Flashpoint
Applying fire stacks builds Flashpoint. At 5 stacks on a target: ignite for bonus burn. At 10 total: next ability explodes with AoE.
Tactical (1) — Wildfire Lash
A flame-tethered whip that deals burn damage and pulls enemies toward her. Can chain into melee or swing around cover.
Core (2) — Thermal Dash
Dashes in a flame arc, leaving a burning trail. Crossing her own trail again causes it to explode.
Special (3) — Kindle Veil
Creates a cloak of fire granting 3s of invisibility. First attack from cloak crits and applies burn. On expiry, erupts in a fire nova.
Ultimate (4) — Blazing Crescendo
A barrage of flame bursts that seek enemy positions. Each hit refreshes burn stacks and disorients. Ends with a firestorm shockwave.
▸Trivia
- ▪Name origin: First name from Winona Ryder and Winona Oak (singer-songwriter). Surname "Tenenbaum" from Mica Tenenbaum, vocalist of Magdalena Bay — also referencing Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums. Earlier drafts used "Oakburn" (on the nose) and "Erdene" (Mongolian for "jewel"). The alias fluctuated between "Ember" and "Ignis" (Latin for "fire") — the latter won for its precision.
- ▪Arson investigator origin is the key to her character. She knows fire technically — the chemistry, the thermodynamics, the forensics. Her abilities are science weaponised, not instinct channelled.
- ▪Ezra's extraction is the most significant event in her backstory that she refuses to discuss. Winona planned the entire Draconian defection solo.
- ▪Viper inspiration is deliberately ironic — a fire character designed after a poison character. Winona and Viper share a trait: controlled, calculating women whose abilities create zones of denial.
- ▪Heat shimmer around her hands is involuntary and permanent. She can't turn it completely off. Handshakes are warm.
▸Goals
- ▪Clear her name — the arson charges still stand. Somewhere in nu-Eden's systems, the evidence that exonerates her exists. She intends to find it.
- ▪Keep Metanoia strategically coherent — a team of illusionists, hackers, brawlers, and tanks needs a unifying tactical vision. Winona provides it.
- ▪Control the fire — not metaphorically. Her abilities are powerful and getting more so. Flashpoint at 10 stacks is already devastating. She's approaching thresholds she hasn't tested.
- ▪Repay no debts — she rescued Ezra because it was right, not because she wanted gratitude. But she'll keep an eye on him. Someone has to.
