The Sundering didn't merely break the sky—it fractured the fundamental laws governing nu-Eden's climate and physics. The city's once-precise atmospheric regulation systems are failing. What was once controlled is now precarious; what was hidden is becoming visible.
▸Weather & Atmospheric Phenomena
Maborite Storms
Iridescent electrical tempests born from maborite saturation in the upper atmosphere. They appear as violet-and-silver clouds that move with unnatural intelligence, following no meteorological pattern. Their winds carry traces of maborite particles, causing:
- ▪Temporary sensory hallucinations
- ▪Electromagnetic interference with technology
- ▪Spontaneous neural activity in exposed organisms
- ▪Reality distortions in localized zones (objects behaving as if gravity changed, or space bending)
Maborite storms are unpredictable and deadly. The corporations have tried to predict them with AI; they fail consistently. It's as if the storms have intentionality.
Dimensional Bleed
Patches where the Sundering's fractured dimensional boundaries leak into physical space. These Bleed Zones:
- ▪Create pockets of altered reality where physics functions differently (inverted gravity, time acceleration, non-Euclidean geometry)
- ▪Are impossible to map; they shift and reform unpredictably
- ▪Sometimes contain glimpses of parallel realities or alternate timelines
- ▪Can trap individuals indefinitely if they venture too deep
The Hollows are essentially one massive Bleed Zone. Smaller instances appear randomly throughout the Interstice.
Artificial Climate Control (Failing)
Each corporate sector maintains proprietary weather control systems—temperature regulation, humidity management, artificial precipitation. But:
- ▪Coverage is spotty and expensive
- ▪Only the wealthy sectors (Cloud, executive quarters) have perfect climate
- ▪The Stacks has partial coverage; citizens experience sudden temperature swings
- ▪The Heap and Interstice are completely unregulated; weather there is savage
When systems fail, cold rain floods the lower sectors unpredictably. In summer, no cooling exists for the poor.
The Red Rain
Occasional precipitation contaminated with trace maborite and industrial pollutants, creating:
- ▪Staining the lower city with iridescent crimson/violet hues (beautiful and horrifying)
- ▪Mild toxicity (nausea, vertigo, temporary personality shifts)
- ▪A faint humming sound during rainfall—possibly psychological, possibly real
- ▪Reflexio screens go haywire during red rain, sometimes displaying unfiltered content or fragmented memories
The corporations claim red rain is harmless. No one believes them, but what choice do the poor have?
Sky Phenomena
Due to the Sundering's dimensional fractures:
- ▪Aurora-like anomalies appear randomly (shimmering walls of light that aren't auroras)
- ▪Void-rifts occasionally tear open in the sky—patches of absolute darkness that look onto nothing
- ▪The Lunar Ring casts strange shadows; its light is slightly off-white, making nights unsettling
- ▪Unidentified aerial phenomena (possibly extraplanar beings, possibly glitches in reality) move through the sky without sound or predictable trajectory
Scientists have theories. None are comforting.
▸Geological Instability
Maborite saturation has made the ground beneath nu-Eden fundamentally unstable:
- ▪Spontaneous sinkholes open without warning, swallowing buildings
- ▪Seismic tremors increase in frequency; major quakes are now monthly, not decades apart
- ▪Maborite seepage creates pockets of dimensional instability; tunnels collapse, reality warps
- ▪Thermal vents open in The Heap, making certain areas uninhabitable
The deeper you go, the worse it gets. The Hollows are essentially a hellscape of collapsed geometry and impossible physics.
▸Air Quality & Contamination
nu-Eden's air is polluted by:
- ▪Industrial emissions from maborite refineries and manufacturing
- ▪Maborite particle saturation (causes mild neurological effects: euphoria, paranoia, or emotional flatness)
- ▪Reflexio pollutants (trace chemicals that enhance suggestibility to media)
- ▪Neumora nanite discharge (people constantly shedding inactive nanites into the air)
Masks are common in the lower sectors. The wealthy have air filtration in their homes. Everyone else adapts.
▸Cartography & Mapping
Detailed maps of nu-Eden's sectors, the Hollows, and the surrounding Interstice are classified nERF intelligence. Access requires Omega-level clearance.
Official maps show clear sector boundaries and transit routes. Reality is messier:
- ▪Sectors overlap; corporate territory isn't clearly demarcated
- ▪Underground routes are unmapped (intentionally—corporations don't want citizens knowing secret passages)
- ▪The Hollows are literally unmappable due to constant shifting and maborite instability
- ▪The Hollows defy cartographic representation; spatial coordinates become meaningless
The best maps available are hand-drawn, often wrong, and constantly updated by those willing to risk getting lost.
