"You don't hear me coming. That's the point."

Backstory

Cordelia Balan is a veteran operative of nERF and the mother of Xenia Balan. Codename Celaeno, Cordelia is a Ghost/Sound-type Controller — a specialist in auditory manipulation and spectral infiltration.

Once a shadow ballad singer, Cordelia forged otherworldly harmonics into her performances — songs that could disorient, misdirect, and unmake the awareness of those who heard them. She retired from nERF's active command structure but never stopped operating. Now she sings with venom and silence, her daughter Xenia inheriting both the artistry and the edge.

Personality

Cordelia operates in the space between what people hear and what actually happened. Her Ghost typing makes her presence ambiguous — she is there, she was there, no one can confirm which. Her Sound secondary weaponises the ambiguity: frequencies that convince the inner ear you're falling, harmonics that make a room feel empty when it isn't, silence deployed as a tactical asset.

As a Controller, Cordelia doesn't fight battles. She reshapes them before others realise they've started. By the time the enemy understands the engagement has begun, Cordelia has already altered the acoustic environment, planted phantom sounds in the wrong directions, and withdrawn to a position that may or may not exist. Her combat philosophy is performance art with lethal consequences.

Her Captain rank — Eta classification — understates her operational impact. Cordelia doesn't command large units. She commands perception. A single Controller who can alter what the enemy hears is worth more than a battalion that can only alter what the enemy sees.

Her relationship with Xenia is one of inheritance: art and edge, beauty and violence, the ability to make something terrible sound like something beautiful. Xenia learned from her mother that performance is a weapon, and the best performances are the ones the audience doesn't survive.

Appearance

Cordelia's design is inspired by _Gantry (Marathon), which she shares her color palette with. The design treats sound and invisibility as aesthetics — the look of someone who exists in the spaces between perception and reality.

  • Hair: Platinum blonde, long and loose — Cordelia's hair moves in directions that don't correspond to the wind. Ghost typing expressed as aesthetic anomaly.
  • Eyes: Pale green, luminous, slightly unfocused — she appears to be looking at something no one else can see. She probably is.
  • Build: Tall, willowy, with the fluid physicality of a dancer or vocalist — Cordelia moves like sound moves: in waves, without friction
  • Outfit: Dark flowing garments layered over tactical underarmor — the aesthetic of a gothic vocalist who happens to be carrying weapons. Dynaxis insignia barely visible. Absinthe-green accents.
  • Color Palette: Spectral green, midnight purple, phantom white — Spiritbox rendered as a wardrobe
  • Distinguishing feature: The voice. Even casual conversation carries undertones that make listeners question whether they heard what they thought they heard. Cordelia doesn't turn her abilities off. She just turns them down.

Abilities

Passive — Echoic Presence

Cordelia's attacks create sound echoes that persist briefly. Allies can interact with these echoes to replay her abilities at reduced power, creating tactical opportunities.

Tactical (1) — Sonic Disruption

Emits a burst of sound waves that disorients enemies, causing them to miss attacks and move erratically for a short duration.

Core (2) — Phantom Chorus

Summons spectral sound entities that orbit Cordelia. The chorus damages enemies on contact and amplifies her other sound-based abilities.

Special (3) — Frequency Shift

Alters the audio frequency of a target area, causing enemies to hear distorted sounds that reduce their accuracy and movement speed while boosting allies' perception.

Ultimate (4) — Cacophony Cascade

Creates a massive sound dome that traps enemies inside. Within the dome, sound waves bounce chaotically, dealing damage and creating unpredictable knockback effects while Cordelia maintains perfect control.

Trivia

  • Full name: Cordelia Cara Balan. Carla was previously her name, which was taken from Carla Dunareanu. The change to Cara was inspired by Cara Delevingne. "Cordelia" itself references Shakespeare's King Lear — the daughter who speaks truth through silence when her sisters lie with noise.
  • Wave III key: The Wave III characters' first-letter initials, except Aoi, spell her name, — making her the structural backbone of an entire character generation, hidden in an acrostic.
  • Codename history: Celaeno, one of the Pleiades in Greek mythology, often associated with darkness and mystery.

Goals

  1. Ensure Xenia surpasses her — Cordelia's art became a weapon. Xenia's weapon became an art. The evolution pleases Cordelia more than she'll admit.
  2. Maintain perceptual dominance — in a world of increasingly sophisticated surveillance (Neumora, Credisys, Tectra's data harvesting), the ability to not be perceived is the last true advantage. Cordelia protects this advantage ruthlessly.
  3. Retire the performance — Cordelia is one of the few Old Guard members who has actually stepped back from active command. The challenge is staying retired when the war keeps finding reasons to need a Ghost.
