nu-Eden: Sundered Skies
//Emiko Saito
Emiko Saito
"Speed is mercy. The faster it ends, the less they suffer."
▸Backstory
Emiko Saito is a veteran operative of nERF and the mother of Yumiko Saito and Yuichi Saito. Codename Eko, Emiko is an Electric/Wind-type Lancer — a rapid-strike specialist from the Old Guard generation.
An ace pilot of the Eastern Eden Air Corps, Emiko defected after learning of air raids on civilian arcs. She abandoned rank, commission, and the only career she'd known rather than participate in the systematic bombardment of non-combatants. Now she leads aerial strikes and encrypted warnings beneath storm-lit skies, turning the skills the Directorate gave her against the system that trained her.
▸Personality
Emiko's philosophy is encoded in her quote: speed is mercy. Not speed is power, or speed is advantage. Mercy. She ends engagements as fast as possible because every second of prolonged combat is a second where someone suffers. Her Electric/Wind typing is combat kindness — lightning doesn't linger, and neither does she.
As nERF's chief engineer and cybersecurity specialist, Emiko operates at the intersection of aerial combat doctrine and digital warfare. She thinks in vectors: approach angles, intercept trajectories, signal propagation paths. Everything is a line from A to B, and the shortest line is the merciful one.
Her rank — Colonel, Epsilon classification — makes her the highest-ranking woman in the Old Guard. This isn't a token distinction. Emiko earned it by being faster, sharper, and more ruthlessly compassionate than everyone around her. She defected from an air corps that was bombing civilians. That decision cost her everything except the skills to ensure it never happens again.
As a mother, Emiko's mercy-through-speed philosophy extends to Yumiko and Yuichi in ways that create tension. She raised them to be fast — fast thinkers, fast movers, fast decision-makers. What she couldn't teach them is that speed without direction is just panic with good reflexes.
▸Appearance
Emiko's design is inspired by Emily by Koyorin, which she shares a name origin with. The design treats speed and mercy as intertwined aesthetics — the look of someone who's always moving toward the end of suffering.
- ▪Hair: Black, kept short in a practical aviation cut — aerodynamics applied to personal grooming
- ▪Eyes: Sharp, dark brown, with the constant micro-tracking of someone trained to read instrument panels at combat speed
- ▪Build: Lean, wiry, with the compressed musculature of a fighter pilot — built for G-force tolerance and quick-twitch reactions
- ▪Outfit: Modified flight suit over tactical gear — Emiko never fully left the cockpit. Electric-blue accents along the seams. Lumicon team insignia.
- ▪Color Palette: Electric blue, storm grey, white — the palette of lightning in overcast skies
- ▪Distinguishing feature: The posture. Emiko stands like she's still in an ejection seat — spine compressed, shoulders forward, ready to launch.
▸Relationships
| Character | Relation | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Yumiko Saito | Daughter | Lumicon operative. Inherited Emiko's speed and sharpened it. The mother-daughter dynamic is one of perfectionism transmitted across generations — Yumiko is faster than Emiko ever was, and Emiko doesn't know whether to be proud or terrified. |
| Yuichi Saito | Son | Lumicon operative. Where Yumiko inherited speed, Yuichi inherited precision. Emiko's engineering mind lives in her son's analytical approach. |
| Lincoln Lau | Lumicon colleague | The immovable object and the unstoppable force. Emiko strikes; Lincoln holds. Their partnership is the foundation of Lumicon's tactical doctrine. |
| Damon McGuire-Sun | Old Guard comrade | Fellow veteran, fellow parent watching children inherit the war. Emiko respects Damon's silence even when she doesn't understand it. |
▸Abilities
Passive — Storm Momentum
Emiko builds speed with each consecutive attack. After 3 attacks, her next ability gains bonus range and damage, representing her building combat momentum.
Tactical (1) — Thunder Lance
Launches a piercing electric spear that chains between enemies. The spear leaves behind wind currents that pull enemies toward its path, setting up follow-up attacks.
Core (2) — Gale Step
Emiko dashes forward with wind-enhanced speed, leaving a trail of electric charges. Enemies touching the trail are shocked and briefly stunned.
Special (3) — Tempest Charge
Builds up electric and wind energy, then releases it in a devastating forward charge. The charge damages enemies in a line and knocks them back, with bonus damage to grouped targets.
Ultimate (4) — Lightning Tempest
Summons a massive storm vortex around Emiko. Lightning strikes randomly damage enemies while wind currents pull them toward the center, creating a chaotic battlefield where Emiko's speed is unmatched.
▸Trivia
- ▪Name origin: "Emiko" derives from "Emily" — an OC from Void:Riven — combined with elements from Yumiko's name. Also references Emily Xu, an artist. The "Emi" prefix connects her to her voice claim (Emi Lo) and the character Emily by Koyorin.
- ▪Defection: Emiko's departure from the Eastern Eden Air Corps is one of the Old Guard's defining moments. She didn't leave because she lost faith in the military. She left because the military lost faith in civilians.
- ▪Highest-ranking woman: Colonel, Epsilon classification — one of the highest-ranked Old Guard members. Emiko earned every step of that ladder by being too fast to catch and too essential to dismiss.
▸Goals
- ▪Ensure Lumicon's next generation surpasses the current one — Yumiko and Yuichi carry Emiko's legacy. She trains them harder than anyone else because she knows what happens when operatives aren't fast enough.
- ▪Never allow another civilian air raid — the reason she defected. The reason she fights. The line that cannot be crossed again.
- ▪Prove that mercy and speed are the same thing — end engagements before they become atrocities. Every fast kill is a slow death prevented.
