Dark represents shadows, silence, and hidden threats: shroud fields, blind status effects, and systems that reward flanking and staying out of direct line-of-sight.

Mechanics

  • Shadow Step: Dark Assassins can move instantly between "Shrouded" areas, making them incredibly difficult to track in low-light environments.
  • Blinding Strike: Direct Dark hits have a small chance to "Blind" the target, reducing their effective vision range for 2 seconds.
  • Void Hunger: Some Dark abilities deal increased damage based on how little light or how many "Shrouded" allies are nearby.

Design Cues

  • VFX: Inky blacks, deep purples, and "smoke" particle effects. Shimmering edges that look like heat-haze in the dark.
  • SFX: Muffled whispers, sharp "snaps," and low-frequency drones (Hollow Knight and Dishonored inspirations).

Typical Abilities (design template)

  • Passive — Umbral Veil: grants a small movement speed bonus when not in direct line-of-sight of any enemy.
  • Tactical (1) — Smoke Screen: deploy a cloud of thick shadows that blinds enemies inside.
  • Core (2) — Shadow Bolt: fire a bolt that deals extra damage if the target is already blinded or shrouded.
  • Special (3) — Void Shroud: become untargetable and invisible for 2 seconds, leaving a trail of shadows.
  • Ultimate (4) — Eternal Night: shroud a large area in absolute darkness, blinding all enemies and revealing them to allies.

Synergies & Counters

  • Synergies: Ghost (stealth combos), Psychic (confusion/blind layering), Water (shimmering reflections).
  • Counters: Light (reveals and purifies), Tech (thermal/advanced optics).
